CNN slow to report on new revelations in Cuomo nursing home cover-up
March 9, 2021
CNN is struggling to cover the various scandals that are engulfing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that top advisers to Cuomo successfully convinced state health officials to alter data from a COVID-19 nursing home report that showed deaths were far larger than the numbers the state had reported earlier.
While the network covered the report Friday morning, the website didn’t post a story until 11 am ET, more than 12 hours after the Journal report appeared online.
By contrast, the New York Times reported on the Journal story Thursday night.
CNN’s verified Twitter account was even slower and didn’t mention the report until 2 p.m. ET on Friday.
Covering the nursing home death scandal and the sexual harassment scandal has brought unwanted scrutiny to CNN as they allowed the governor’s brother Chris to interview him accentuating the positive and largely ignoring the brewing nursing home scandal. Only when Gov. Cuomo came under fire did CNN ban Chris from covering the scandals.
Cuomo has been brushing off the nursing home scandal, but the sexual harassment claims have forced him to apologize and threaten to end his political career while his brother sits on the sidelines.
Chris Cuomo addressed the issue on his show earlier this week.
“Obviously, I’m aware of what’s going on with my brother,” he said Monday. “Obviously, I cannot cover it because he is my brother. Now, of course, CNN has to cover it. They have covered it extensively and they will continue to do so.”
After being stung by criticism of favoritism, CNN has stepped up its coverage of the sexual harassment claims against Gov. Cuomo and apparently will no longer be a “safe space” for the COVID-19 special Emmy award winner.
