CNN reporter tries to cover for McAuliffe’s education remarks: It has ‘spun out of control’

The extremely tight Virginia governor’s race has the media scrambling to help Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe, and CNN reporter Eva McKend tried to do exactly that on CNN Newsroom Tuesday.

CNN anchor Victor Blackwell asked McKend about Republican challenger Glenn Youngkin making education a major issue in his campaign and his attacks on McAuliffe’s comments about parents.

“You know, Glenn Youngkin has landed on this closing argument that it is a fundamental right in Virginia of parents to be engaged in their children’s education and that his opponent, Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe doesn’t believe that. Now, that is not the case. A comment McAuliffe made at a debate in September has sort of been spun out of control,” McKend said.

McKend tried to clean up McAuliffe’s remarks and tacitly agreed with his stance on parental involvement.

“Here’s what McAuliffe actually said, he said he was not going to let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decision and that he didn’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach. Now, he has said he is running a Virginia-focused campaign, Youngkin, that is, but has latched on to the national implications of this issue,” McKend said.

McKend seemed clueless to the fact that parents want to be more engaged with their children’s education and with the furor over critical race theory in Loudoun County, Va., and other parts of the country, McAuliffe’s comments about parental involvement in the curriculum are offensive to many parents who want their children to have an education free of left-wing ideology.

Glenn Youngkin should probably send her a thank you note for inadvertently giving his campaign a boost.
