Gizmodo conflates natural consequences and cancel culture — No, LibsofTikTok did not get people fired
July 19, 2024
If you make a bad joke – hey, even a good joke – about race, or gender, or trans issues, the progressives and woke will chase you down across social media. They’ll insist that your continued employment is “problematic” and shriek, loudly, that you must be fired. We’ve seen this again and again.
If you make a bad joke – or even a good joke – about an attempted assassination of an ex-President and current presidential candidate this should not happen to you. Because reasons, obviously:
Libs of TikTok Is Getting People Fired for Joking About Trump’s Assassination Attempt
At which point the centrist and rational might ask what’s different here?
The right-wing account has been reporting people to their bosses after they joked about Trump’s brush with death
Oh, jokes. And the account doing the reporting is “right wing,” so of course that’s bad.
Chaya Raichik, a real estate agent from Brooklyn who spends much of her spare time operating the deranged LibsofTikTok account, has arguably made her name by railing against cancel culture. Now, in a move that could be read as either blatant hypocrisy or a ruthless act of revenge, Raichik and her Libs of TikTok cadre are attempting to cancel people who joked about Donald Trump’s recent assassination attempt.
Of course, the reality is that LibsofTikTok isn’t canceling anyone at all. Nor is the account, nor Raichik, getting anyone fired. If someone made a joke—or comment, or spouted vitriolic hatred, whatever—that led to their being fired, then it’s the joke, comment, or vitriolic hatred, which means their employer no longer wishes to hire them. It’s that original action that leads to the firing. That’s the reason people are being fired — for what they said.
That’s the first problem with this from Gizmodo, the usual media insistence upon not facing reality. No one gets fired because an account says “You said this!”. People do get fired for having said this of course….
The other, the second, problem here is the obvious partiality on display. The progressives have never had a problem with chasing down people for saying what they, themselves, don’t like being said. Now that it’s turn and turnabout it’s all just terrible that people are being held to account for what they’ve said.
Tsk.
But then as always, if the progressives didn’t have double standards then they’d have no standards at all.
