Texas school district official acknowledges ‘loopholes’ in trans sports law, video shows
DALLAS (CITC) — A Texas school district official acknowledged the existence of “loopholes” to a state law requiring K-12 students compete in sports based on the sex listed on their birth certificates, undercover footage released Monday by watchdog group Accuracy in Media (AIM) shows.
An undercover journalist with AIM spoke to the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) while posing as a parent who wanted their transgender child to participate in girls’ sports. In footage shared by AIM, Dallas ISD LGBT Youth Program Coordinator Mahoganie Gaston discussed the hypothetical use of an “updated” certificate.
They said ‘birth certificate,’ they didn’t say ‘original’ or ‘updated,’” Gaston said in the video. “Always refining, you know? They find the loopholes in everything.”
Gaston also promised the school district would “absolutely” support a transgender athlete in the event their participation in sports led to an accident or injury of other players.
“I tell people all the time, ‘I will go to jail for saving their child’s life,’” Gaston said. “I guess no conservative kids come out gay.”
