Gov. Greg Abbott called for criminal and civil investigations into Irving ISD after a hidden-camera video showed a school administrator discussing transgender students playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity despite the state’s ban.

In the video, a woman — later identified as an “undercover journalist” — is heard discussing a potential move to Texas with her transgender daughter. She asks a man, identified in the recording as an Irving ISD official, whether her child could play on the girls’ soccer team.

The administrator references the state’s stance on transgender students but notes that if the child’s birth certificate is changed out of state, school officials could accept what’s on official documentation, according to the video.

“It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught,” the official says in the video. “If no one knew, then we’re good.”
