The U.S. Department of Education, Department of Health and Human Services, and the General Services Administration have announced a comprehensive review of Columbia University’s federal contracts and grants amid ongoing investigations into potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

According to the announcement:

“Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Education (ED), and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced a comprehensive review of Columbia University’s federal contracts and grants in light of ongoing investigations for potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.”

The federal task force is considering Stop Work Orders on $51.4 million in federal contracts with Columbia and will conduct a broader review of the university’s more than $5 billion in federal grants to ensure compliance with civil rights laws.

This action follows Columbia’s failure to address antisemitic harassment on campus, including incidents involving both students and faculty. The university’s handling of these issues has drawn significant criticism, culminating in the resignation of Columbia President Minouche Shafik.

Accuracy in Media played a key role in exposing the extent of the problem through investigations, on-campus activism, and public awareness campaigns. A series of visits, video investigations, and mobile billboards brought national attention to antisemitism at Columbia, increasing pressure on university leadership.

While AIM does not have the authority to cancel federal grants, its efforts have highlighted antisemitism at Columbia, pressured university leaders, and contributed to the federal government’s decision to take action.

The review of Columbia’s funding underscores the importance of continued scrutiny and accountability in higher education. AIM will continue to investigate antisemitism on college campuses and ensure that institutions are held responsible for their actions.
