Northwestern University’s President Michael Schill announced on Thursday that he will resign amid tension between the university and the White House.
“Over the past three years, it has been my profound honor to serve as president of Northwestern University,” Schill said recently. “In that time, our community has made significant progress while simultaneously facing extraordinary challenges. Together, we have made decisions that strengthened the institution and helped safeguard its future.”
Schill acknowledged challenges stemming from the Trump administration, including a federal research funding freeze of hundreds of millions of dollars, in a statement from the university.
The funding freeze contributed to the university’s decision to lay off around 200 people over the summer.
In April, the Trump administration froze $790 million in funding for the university over claims it did not do enough to protect Jewish students. Last month, Schill testified to Congress about these claims.
