DENTON, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened an investigation into the University of North Texas for claiming it is violating state law.

In a release Friday, Paxton said this is in response to the circulation of a video that appears to show a staff member from UNT’s social work department discussing how DEI-related material is still being taught. The video was reportedly recorded by an undercover investigator. In the release, the attorney general’s office said the video goes on to imply ways staff can “get around” the law.

Paxton, a Republican, criticized the university in a statement, saying Texas law prohibits certain DEI-related activities at public institutions and alleging the university may not be complying.

As part of the investigation, Paxton sent a letter to the dean of UNT’s College of Public Affairs and Human Sciences requesting an explanation on the statements made in the video. The attorney general is also seeking documentation detailing the university’s compliance with state law, including any DEI-related policies, guidance, accreditation requirements and internal communications.

The University of North Texas responded to the investigation. “The views expressed by a UNT staff member in June are inconsistent with the university’s commitments and practices as a public institution to comply with state and federal laws and regulations,” the statement read.
