San Diego State mandates DEI councils across every college

Faculty senate policies at San Diego State University require every college to maintain a “Diversity Council” to provide guidance related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
The policy appears in the University Senate’s Policy File for the 2026–27 academic year.
The university requires every college and many administrative bodies including the library system to maintain a Diversity Council in order to “ensure effective shared governance, transparency and broad sharing of relevant information from all voices regarding diversity, inclusion and equity.”
The councils exist to “review, advise, and provide feedback” regarding DEI and “may be involved in coordinating diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.” Their work also extends to faculty hiring and academics.
The College of Sciences’ publicly available diversity plan requires an “Inclusion Representative” on faculty search committees.
The plan also aspires to create a “climate and curriculum that emphasizes the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion with respect to race and gender as measured by climate surveys.”
The Mechanical Engineering Department’s “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan” calls for required applicant DEI statements and for all job advertisements to be reviewed for “inclusive language.”
The plan aims to “increase the recruitment of female faculty.”
Other councils have sought to integrate DEI into their daily institutional operations.
The Information Technology Division says its diversity council seeks to encourage “critical review in relation to diversity, equity, and inclusion within IT solutions.”
One goal in the university library’s 37-page DEI plan is to standardize “DEI practices across hiring managers.”
The mandated use of diversity councils and DEI plans received criticism from Accuracy in Media President Adam Guillette.
“DEI is division and hatred disguised as tolerance and inclusion,” Guillette told Campus Reform.
Guillette pointed to a large disparity in political donations supporting left-wing candidates from donors who identified San Diego State University as their employer.
“That makes them one of the least diverse entities in America,” Guillette continued. “The feds should immediately pull the $150 million given annually and all private donors should cease contributions.”
